Grow tomatoes in the greenhouse for a reliable larger crop
You will need:
- Growmore
- tomatoes
- tomato pots
- trowel
Our tomatoes are going into a bed but they can be grown in large pots using good quality peat-free multi-purpose compost. We are using tomato pots (they don’t have a bottom) also, they increase the area where roots can form and can therefore increase nutrient and water uptake which leads to a bigger crop.
Fork a couple of handfuls of Growmore into the soil.
Place the tomato pots securely into the soil about 45cm (18”) apart and fill with compost.
Plant the tomato securely into the tomato pot and water. Remember to keep them evenly moist at all times otherwise you will have problems with splitting. Growing them in the tomato pot also increases the amount of moisture in the soil.
Keep the vents open to ensure a good airflow and discourage any fungal infections, once the weather warms also leave the door open.
Also need a good airflow to pollinate the flowers otherwise you may have to pollinate by hand.
Once they have formed their first truss feed weekly with a high potash fertiliser, such as Tomorite.
