FAQ

Angela Slater. Angela has worked for Hayes in various departments for over 35 years and has a good knowledge of garden plants, design and garden problems. Environmentally sound gardening practices are hugely important as is a consideration for attracting wildlife into our outdoor spaces.

How do I store my bird feed?

Store somewhere dry and frost free in metal bins. If you have a problem with rodents a metal bin with a snug fitting lid is essential as they will chew through plastic and are smart enough to knock off a lid.

Is it worth spending extra on better quality bird food?

Yes the better quality brands have carried out research on the optimum mix for providing the birds with seeds and grains which they will eat and not spit onto the ground. Better quality blends also don't use grains which germinate all over the garden.

How do I avoid attracting rodents when I feed the birds?

If possible site the feeders over a concrete pad or paving slab which can easily be swept clean. Clean underneath the feeders every day taking care to avoid leaving any food around overnight. If rodents are climbing up your feeding table of feed station install a baffle to prevent them climbing the pole. Alternatively take in the feeders overnight and store in a rodent proof container, not plastic as rats can easily chew through, ideally use a metal container. Store the spare feed in a metal container with a tight lid which can't be opened by rodents, rats are smarter than you think.

Where is the best place to site my bird feeders?

Birds are very wary of being ambushed by predators so site your feeders where they have good vision all around. They also need somewhere to shelter if they are threatened by predators so a nearby thick bush where they can hide would be beneficial.

Do birds need feeding all year round?
Yes, they need a supply of feed year round as due to habitat destruction and less of us keeping traditional gardens their natural food source is dwindling. They need special feeds at certain times of the year, such as high fat content found in peanuts and fat balls when they are starting breeding and at the start of winter. The fat helps them put on body weight which is important when they are trying to raise a family and get through the winter.
