Save money by growing your own Peas and Broad Beans, easy and delicious
Peas and broad beans are easy to grow and will provide a crop all through summer; as they are fairly expensive to buy fresh from the supermarket they make sense to grow if you have a little bit of space.
You will need:
- rake
- seed
- watering can with a fine rose
- labels
The pea variety we have chosen to grow is ‘Hurst Green Shaft’ which is a good high yielding, easy variety to grow. The bean variety is ‘Witkiem’ a good yielding, easy variety which matures quickly.
Make 2 grooves, 20 -23cm (8 – 9”) apart, in soil which has been raked to a fine crumb.
Sow the 2 rows with the peas or beans, place them in the bottom of each row about 20 -23cm (8 - 9”) apart.
Rake the soil back over them.
Lay some twigs over the row or cover with netting to stop pigeons pulling the emerging seedlings out.
Water in with a fine rose.
Remember to keep watering if the weather is dry, if they get too dry the plants will be stunted and the pods won’t fill out.
To avoid having a glut of peas & beans sow just a few at 2 weekly intervals.
