Follow these simple steps and your new fish will be happy and stress-free
Try and buy the fish as close to home as possible in order to minimise the travelling time. They should be placed in a dark bag, again to minimise the stress.
You will need:
- thermometer
Turn off the electrics to the tank including the light.
Take the bags of fish out of the dark bag and place the fish in the bags into the tank; leave them for 10 – 15 minutes until the temperatures in the bags and the tank have equalised.
Open the bags and roll down the top a little; the bags should float on the surface. Test the temperature in the bag and the tank to make sure they are the same. Scoop a little of the water from the tank into the bag and leave for 5 minutes.
Gently catch the fish in a net and transfer to the tank. Don’t tip the water from the bag into the tank as the fish will have excreted in the bag and you don’t want this in the tank.
Plug the heater and the filter back in; leave the light and bubbler off for an hour or so until the fish are acclimatised to their new surroundings.
Replace the lid.
