Make the change and join the Hayes family

Hayes Garden World has been in the same family since it was started over 200 years ago and that is the ethos by which we treat our staff, as family. We look out for each other and if you do encounter family problems which have the potential to affect your work life the company will do everything possible to support you while you get things back on an even keel, and we all need a little helping hand at some point in our lives. The family still run the company day to day and are justifiably proud of their achievements and encourage the staff to follow this ethos and be proud to work at the most prestigious store in the Lake District and one of the premier garden centres in north west England.

As part of our commitment to the environment we provide staff transport from Barrow, Ulverston and Kendal, so if you think you live too far from the store then maybe not so. Our staff tend to stay with us for a considerable amount of time, the team leader of the Outdoor Plant department has just recently been awarded the RHS medal for 40 years’ service to horticulture with the same company. Many of the staff have met their partners while working for Hayes with both continuing to work for the company. Whether you are looking for a full-time position or just a few hours to fit around other commitments we are sure to be able to work with you. We don't work in the evening, except for one or two special occasions such as Bonfire Night and Christmas late night openings, so you can always be sure that you will be able to spend your evenings with family and friends.

As one of the country’s largest retailers of Garden Furniture we have a huge showroom with a team committed to customer service and as one of their members you would be able to fully communicate your ability to give the customer all the necessary information to enable them to have their perfect outdoor living space. If you have a love of utilising your outdoor space as much as possible whether it’s just for the weekend barbecue or just to enjoy the sun then this job is for you, you can help make a difference to people’s lives.

Once our customers have ‘shopped ‘til they’ve dropped’ the perfect spot to ease those aching feet is the Four Seasons Restaurant with it’s gorgeous views over the Lakeland fells. We have recently revamped the restaurant, removing tables and adding lots of greenery to give the customers more privacy. The menu has also been brought into the 21st century with a mix of main and light meals and of course our famous home-baked scones and custard tart are still one of the main attractions for customers. If you think you can deliver a warm friendly welcome to our customers and love working as part of a small dedicated team then this is the position for you, full and part-time positions available..

Angela Slater

Daughter of a farmer and market gardener so have always had a connection with the outdoors, whether it was keeping animals or producing fruit, vegetables and cut flowers. Along with my work at Hayes Garden World I also have a smallholding, mainly breeding rare breed pigs. I gained an HND and BSc in Conservation and Environmental Land Management, as a result I am an ardent environmentalist and have a keen interest in environmentally friendly gardening. In my time at Hayes I worked for several years in the Outdoor Plant and Houseplant areas.
